This month we concentrate on Home Security. It is important that when you are away on holiday this year to ensure your property is secure.
Sometimes your house can be targeted as the thieves actually want your vehicle on the driveway and break in to steal the keys. Many homes now have flat screen TV's, multiple laptops, mp3 players and the like lying around the home that are easy pickings.
Read on for some advice..

Here are some easy to follow essential security tips. Don't forget - burglars take advantage of lazy home owners!
- Pretend to burgle your own home. You'll unearth any weaknesses in your home security that you may have not noticed previously
- Fit an intruder alarm, home alarm systems are one of the most effective deterrents, a potential thief does not want any attention drawn to them
- Always lock up your home, even if you go out only for a short time. Many burglars just walk in through an unlocked door or window, especially in the summer. Also lock your front door whilst in the garden as thieves can walk into your home unnoticed
- Change all the locks and tumblers when you move into a new house. This eliminates the possibility that any previous occupiers have a key for your house
- For the most effective alarm system, conceal all wiring. A professional burglar looks for places where he or she can disconnect the security system
- Your house should look occupied at all times. Use timers to switch lights and radios on and off when you're not at home
- If you have a faulty alarm that frequently goes off, get it fixed or replaced immediately and tell your neighbours that it has been repaired. Many people ignore an alarm that frequently sounds
- If you have a Yale style spring latch on your front door, always deadlock it so thieves cant slip something between the door frame and open the latch
- If you lose your keys, change the locks immediately
- Avoid leaving a key under the mat or a plant pot. Thieves will always look for a spare key to your home
- Don't leave notes for delivery drivers or family members on the door. These act as a welcome note for a burglar, telling them that no-one’s home
- If the entrances to your home are dark, consider installing a PIR security light. Most thieves don't want to be observed trying to break in
- Fit a door chain, so if you are unsure who is outside, you can open the door slightly to see them and they wont be able to push past you into your home
- Ask for ID from any sales person who requests entry to your home. Ask that their ID be pushed under the door. Many professional burglars use this cover to ’case’ your home. If you're doubtful, check with the person's company before letting them in
- Dogs are good deterrents to burglars. Even a small, noisy dog can be effective. Thieves do not like to have attention drawn to them

Wireless Alarm Installation – DIY or Professional? Various kits are available for the DIY person to install. The question is should you install yourself or leave it to the professionals. If you are confident and wish to save costs, then install yourself. However, for generally a small extra installation fee, a professional fitting may be more advantageous long term as many environment options need to be considered and will be carried out by the professional fitting the alarm: Considerations include: Signal strength and background noise levels from the proposed locations of all devices. The strength of the signals received by the control panel is important to correct functioning.
Avoidance of mounting transmitting or receiving devices such as the control panel or aerials under metal lintels at the top of windows and doors.
Locality of transmitters or receivers fitted onto metal or UPVC clad metal door or window frames.
Where the receiver aerial is mounted vertically, the greatest radio range can usually be obtained by mounting all the transmitters so that their aerials are also vertical.
Any requirement to run wiring into the control panel for power requirements, including the fitting of electrical junction boxes.
Avoidance of mounting the control panel or aerial near to electrical distribution equipment, televisions, or computer equipment as these can generate background noise. Avoidance of large metal objects i.e. water tanks, boilers and radiators. Large metal objects can prevent radio signals from passing between the (PIR) transmitters and the control panel.
If a remote aerial is used ensure it is mounted in the correct orientation.
In some older properties with thick stone walls adequate signal strength cannot be obtained through them. The receiver aerial if used can be mounted high up in a loft space so the signal path is via the floor boards to increase the signal strength to an adequate level, particularly where the devices such as the bell boxes are mounted on the outside walls.
Mount the passive detection devices in an ideal position, i.e. a passive will not necessarily need to go at ceiling level or on an internal wall as hiding a cable is not a consideration.
Set-up, walk test and troubleshoot the installation.
Give advice where required. Show user how to operate the system.
